I came from humble beginnings, as they say.
My father was the janitor in a public school. My mother worked in a blouse factory. They were hard-working and very smart… but they never had the education or opportunity that they were deprived of growing up and living through depression and World War.
They scrimped and saved to help me be the first person in my family to go to college. I worked very hard to make them proud and graduated magna cum laude. I bounced around for a few years in good jobs that just didn’t inspire me, until I found the courage to open my own advertising agency – with $200 in the bank, my wife pregnant with our 2nd child, and lousy insurance that would not cover the Caesarian needed when our 2nd child was born.
In other words, I was young and stupid and foolhardy.
But I wanted more out of life. I just didn’t know what “more” meant yet. My first office was half of our bedroom in our 2nd-floor one-bedroom apartment in Ocean City NJ…
I bought an old used desk, nailed two pieces of plywood paneling to the back of the desk and wedged the top of the paneling against the ceiling of the bedroom. And that’s how it started.
I worked obsessively hard because I had to. There was no Plan B. After two years I moved into my 1st real office in Ocean City…
Grew the business into 2700 sq. ft. in an office building just outside of Atlantic City…
Then added offices on Madison Avenue in New York City…
1616 Walnut St. in Philadelphia…
Denver, CO…
Acquired vacation condos in Winter Park, Evergreen and Fraser CO and in Myrtle Beach SC…
And, eventually, built a headquarters for the business just across the bay from Ocean City NJ…
Living nearby in a 5000+ sq. ft. home on a 3.5-acre wooded estate…
It was a long way from half our bedroom in Ocean City. And I’m most proud that we did it with total integrity. We built a reputation that our word was our bond… TRUST was our currency… and we were totally dedicated to every client’s success.
